Since 1980's, important progresses have been continuously made on the researches of historic cultural towns in China. The prior researches mostly centered in the fields of characteristic values, formation and evolvement, protection and development and tourism industry studies, which shaped a phase involving multiple subjects. However, view from the resources of historic cultural towns and taking the industrialization development of their cultural researches, argument on the feasibility and development models of cultural industry in historic cultural towns, proposed in this thesis is still a new field for academicians to follow up. The thesis makes the geographic limitations and emphasize on the ancient towns in Suburban Shanghai, mainly studying the industrialization of their traditional cultural heritages. These ancient towns are the typical ones which are located on the border of Shanghai metropolis. The suburban areas bear the characteristics of dual location, rapid development of economy, broken of spacious background, vulnerability of ecological environment and cultural diversification of waterside towns. These ancient towns influenced most directly and sharply by the radiation from the center of Shanghai, leading to radical changes on social and economic structure and cultural systems, etc. The evolvement of industry structure and the choice of future dominant industry of these ancient towns are a special academic direction. On one hand, the local governments try to foster their own town enterprises while on the other hand, they take over the transferred industries from the downtown Shanghai because of their location advantages. Such development model lacks the foreseeing estimation and judgement for the tendency of cultural industry as the future dominant industry, not to mention the huge potentiality of the traditional cultural heritage in ancient towns and reach the new breakthrough on the base of industry structure. The thesis makes systematically category of the traditional cultural resources of ancient towns in suburban Shanghai on the base of many on-the-spot investigations and many verifications on literatures, studying on the industrialization especially on the feasibility and development models of cultural industry. By outlining the entire skeleton of evolvement of industry structure and development tendency of future dominant industry, the thesis concludes the models of cultural industry development and upgrading after thoroughly studying and analyzing the traditional cultural resources of ancient towns. These models can be applied to ancient towns in suburban Shanghai and even to the entire historic cultural towns in the area of south Yangtze River, providing direction and reference in the process of balancing the protection and development of traditional cultural resources in ancient towns.
