The Analysis Of The Translated Texts Of Pride And Prejudice From The Perspective Of Bakhtin's Discourse Dialogicality

Bakhtin, as a great Russian thinker and literary theorist, initiates his dialogic theory by analyzing dialogicality of text and probing on the dialogic nature of discourse. Literature translation study, which is a linguistic-oriented activity, can be inspired with reference to dialogic theory. Taking advantage of Bakhtin's dialogic analysis of discourse within dialogic theory, this thesis demonstrates its points in terms of the translation of "double-voicedness", the increase of the translator's "voice", the space-time dialogic nature of retranslating and the style preference of translated text caused by the "dialogue" between the translator and the expected readership in the perspective of aesthetic senses, with discourse examples all drawn from the text of Pride and Prejudice. A dialogic nature of translation is concluded at the end of the thesis.It is composed of three chapters. Chapter One first introduces the concept of "double-voicedness" as a main characteristic of dialogicality of literary discourse, and a probe of reproduction of "double-voicedness" in the target language is then followed. In Chapter Two, a focus switch to the dialogicality of humane discourse is made to discuss the increase of translator's voice during translating, the "dialogue"-caused copy phenomenon of retranslation and the translated text's style attributed to the diachronic "dialogue". Chapter Three presents the nature of translation as a process of various everlasting dialogues instead of specific subject-centered.A textual, cultural and essential expression of translation activity is demonstrated by analyses of discourse translating. In translating Pride and Prejudice, not all translators are sub-consciously "dialogue-aware", often leaving inappropriate / false translated texts to be improved.
