Nathaniel Hawthorn was an outstanding writer in the period of American Romanticism in 19th century. On the basis of carrying on British Gothic novels of earlier period, he has tremendous surpass which form the unique"Gothic Romance". Relying on the "dark" tradition of Gothic novel, the author reveals the malpractice of religious society and the dark essence of humanity, and the irrational text narration contains rational social introspection and deep ethics exploration.There are three parts in this thesis, which discusses the artistic characteristics of Hawthorn's novels from the three aspects of plot arrangement,character portrayal and art feature. The text analysis pays attention to the complex and contradictory concepts of religion,humanity and fate. Part One compares the plot structure of Hawthorn's novels and classical tragedies from the background of Gothic novel, and to highlight the important effect of reader involvement and absurd things in plot arrangement; Part Two analyzes the deep intension of character type,character psychology and character density around the Gothic characters, so as to demonstrate his heritage and excess of the early Gothic novel. Part Three discusses the novel's artistic feature from the view of reader's acceptance. This part analyzes the source of Hawthorn's mystery deeply, taking the symbolism technique,horror theory and subjective narrative pattern for the object of discussion, in the way to realize the diversified theme and the unique aesthetic value.This thesis dedicates to meticulous text analysis and macroscopic art discussion, which explores the deep and complex theme hidden in the narration of Hawthorn's novels. In conclusion, as an important type of literature, Gothic novel takes a remarkable place in the history of western literature.
