American writer Edgar Allan Poe is a poet, novelist, as well as a critic. He is a quite controversial writer: with rough as well as poor life and arduous personal efforts, he makes brilliant achievements. He was treated coldly in the United States in his time, while the literary world in the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, France and other countries amazed his genius. In his short life of forty years, with only 40 poems and 70 short stories, with which he has created a new realm, however.He is skilled in the creation of poetry and fiction, literary criticism is also unique. His poetry has pure musical beauty unfailing. His short stories are almost horror fictions, and he initiates the classical detective story and the modern science fiction, which advance the Gothic style and this technique to the extremely high artistic boundary. He absorbs and passes on the deeply display of legendary Gothic novels including terror, suffering, combined with his own style and trait, so transforms horror, grotesque from the anecdote to the art palace. With creativity, he shifts the focus of terror from the outside description to people's hearts—the terror of the soul, through the means of symbol, suspense, first-person narrator to render the atmosphere, then create a complete and united effect of mystery, terror, stirring, which is Poe aiming for and insisting on all his life and simultaneously implemented in his narrative poetry and novels.This paper, based on his several famous works: "Ligeia", "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Raven" tries to study the Gothic style, considering that Poe draws on the essence of traditional Gothic literature, and promotes the development and innovation of Gothic literature. He searches for the root of fear, explores the mystery of death and pursues the supernal beauty all his life, which has made great contributions and far-reaching significance to the world.Introduction explores the brief introduction of Poe's life, his literary review and thesis statement and framework,Chapter one analyzes the origin and traditional characteristics of Gothic style and the traditional gothic element in Poe's works, such as the gloomy setting, the odd character and the unusual plot.Chapter two is devoted to study the development of the traditional gothic style in Allan Poe's works, such as the unity of Gothic effect, creation of psychological Gothic novel—the horror of soul, building the new form of gothic—combination of horror and ratiocination .
