Translations Of Yao Mulan's Speech In Two Chinese Versions Of Moment In Peking

As the founder of Systemic-Functional Grammar, Halliday states that there are three metafunctions in language: ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. Interpersonal meaning refers to the function that the speaker uses language to participate in communicative acts with other people, expressing his own attitudes, judgments and evaluations, seeking to influence the attitudes and behavior of others, and presenting social relations between the speaker and the listener and the purpose of the speaker. According to Halliday, the realization of interpersonal function is typically fulfilled by mood, modality and key system. Since the semantic feature of key is not carried out by vocabulary structure, but by the contour of tone in phonetic tier, it is not included in the thesis.Based on the framework of interpersonal function (interpersonal meaning), this thesis analyzes Yao Mulan's speech in Moment in Peking in Yu Fei's and Zhang Zhenyu's translations, aiming to find out the realizations and failures of the two Chinese versions in reflecting Yao Mulan's social status, characteristics, social relations, etc. and further prove the possibility and profound significance of interpersonal meaning's application to translation studies.Emphasis is put on the translation of vocabulary and clausal level to explore the realization and translation methods of the interpersonal meaning during translation process. The research shows that both Yu Fei's translation and Zhang Zhenyu's translation have their own successful and unsuccessful points. As a whole, Zhang's version wins at the level of the whole clause mood while Yu's version is better in choosing vocabularies. It is hoped that this thesis can be valuable to the research of application of interpersonal meaning to translation studies.
