Modern Sculpture Art Of China In A Consuming-age Background

There is always an intimate connection between the existing of art and the current situation of the society. So does China's sculpture. Not only the idea and the function, but the patterns and materials all obey some requirement of different social stages. At the same time, it is influenced by some imposed elements at some special stages. For China's modern sculpture which begins its exploration for the whole new shape since the early 20^th century, it has developed several stages: the transplant of the European Realism before China's liberation, the imitation from the Soviet Union's Socialist Realism after liberation, European Modernism since the Reforms, the practice of Post-Modernism and the sculpture practice in 1990's under the influence of Consumptionism. The first two periods can be seen a period of beginning and practice under a special social surroundings and political environment, in which the forerunners bring the western classical Realism into China, thus, begins a period which is quite different with the traditional sculpture form; while the last two periods mark a real start of China's sculpture. With China's Reforms and Opening-up policy progressed, new ideas, artistic forms and materials are gradually and changing the idea of creation. In the 90's for instance, in which a whole new society of consumption is taking shape, China's modern sculpture art is developing in a remarkable speed in no more than 20 years under the direction of the new idea of consumption.The article focus on the sculpture development in the recent years through the review to China's sculpture development in the 20^th century. From the transit of the art conception, the clear-up of the politics-labeled art,the care to life and the entertainment inclination in the modern sculpture art to think over the expression of the sculpture are in the consumption time, summarizes the break from the normal visual appreciation in the process of artistic development, and brings a personal thought of the structure of China's contemporary sculpture. As a part of social culture, sculpture is faced many problems which is to suffocate its development. We need to create a more healthy social culture, a much better living surroundings in order to achieve a rational choice between the material need and spiritual purpose for the localization of modern sculpture.
