Today,it is a quite new type of education for the five-year vocational college in Guiyang, whose students are just admitted right from junior middle schools. It combines the vocational education with that of the common ones. It's a good try for training the applied local personnel. However, it is noticeable that those students who are majored in English have very low proficiency in English, and they are lacking in motivation. All these factors may severely affect the quality of English language teaching in this area as a whole. Learners'motivation is one of the most important factors for their academic achievement in language learning, and it is very vital for those students to improve their performance in English learning and help with their English language proficiency. Since 1990s, many researchers in foreign language teaching home and abroad have studied on learners'motivation deeply, and they have especially stressed the influences of motivation to their learning outcome. By borrowing from the relevant study on motivation theories, this article has surveyed the motivation of English majors with low proficiency at a five-year vocational college in Guiyang. The study focuses on the whole situation of their motivation and the affecting factors, for the purpose of exploring the strategies for solving the problems of their motivation of the particular group of students.This following is the main structure of this article:First, the paper focuses on the feature of the education for the five-year vocational college and those of the English majors with low proficiency, thus to answer the questions, that is, what are their major motivations for learning English ? What are the factors that influence the students'English learning? How to stimulate and develop their motivation for English learning? Second, it delimits the concept of the students with low proficiency and also analyzes the relevant current studies. It mainly provides an overview link with the current studies, definitions & features, affecting factors, classifications and functions, especially, the impact of learning motivation on the students with low proficiency. Next, it summarizes the models and strategies for stimulating and developing students'motivation. This paper is based on the survey to English major students with low proficiency from the five-year vocational college at the Guiyang College by means of questionnaire and study dairies as well teaching dairies. The outcome of the survey indicates that the general lack of learning motivation for those students can be seen easily and it may have the tendency to be demoted as they advance to a higher grade. And there are different levels of motivation among those particular students. Mainly,There are intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence their motivation. Finally, this article advances some of the solutions to stimulate and cultivate learners'motivation. Also, it pointes out the ways for teachers'further study .
