With the development of China's economy,English has become an indispensable tool for us to communicate with the world.In order to develop professional competence in the operating post,the teaching of English extends from the basic language competence to the cultivation of professional English competence.Content-based Instruction is a teaching model that combines language teaching with content teaching.Under this approach,the teaching activities should focus on the subject content,in other words,language teaching and content teaching are conducted at the same time.It provides possibility for achieving the goal of second language acquisition and developing the professional language practical competence.English listening is not only an important language skill but also the difficult point of teaching.So far,there have been very few researches on experimental studies on CBI in English teaching in vocational colleges,especially the English listening teaching in hotel management.This paper mainly explores the effectiveness of Content-based Instruction on English listening for hotel majors in higher vocational colleges.Both the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are adopted in the study.In the mean while,the relevant researches and theories are used in the study.The study was carried out for 17 weeks,150 sophomores were chosen from hotel management in Shijiazhuang Vocational College of Industry and Commerce for the teaching experiment.The subjects have the similar age and educational background.They were randomly divided into the experimental class(75 students who were under the Content-based Instruction)and the control class(75 students who were taught in the Traditional English Instruction).In this paper,the quantitative study was conducted on the students with pretest at the beginning of the semester and the post-test at the end of the semester(Practical English Test for Colleges-Level B).A questionnaire was utilized on the English learning motivation of the students in two classes after the Content-based Instruction.A qualitative study was the interviews involving 10 students in the experimental group and 10 students in the control group to supplement the quantitative study.The purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate the efficiency ofContent-based Instruction in the students' English motivation and listening proficiency of the hotel management in the vocational college.The results reveal that the students in the experimental group show a stronger desire to learn.As for English listening proficiency,the experimental group made a greater progress than the control group.Therefore,the students not only developed their cultural knowledge,but also improved the English proficiency.Content-based Instruction that combining content teaching and language skills plays a positive role in English classroom teaching.
