Since Wan brothers produced the first cartoon in 1926, Chinese animation has developed for more than 70 years. Chinese animations have achieved remarkable achievement during this period. Until the early 1980s when an invasion of foreign cartoons occured, domestic animation industry steadily retreated, and radually lost its past glory. There are many reasons for this retreatment, one of which includes the improper topic selection. The choice of topic is particularly important in art creation. Chinese national culture has a long history and abundant materials. However, the content of Chinese animation is limited, and relatively simple. Topics are not fully exhibited.Japanese artists are good at "borrowing" the cartoon creation overseas, especially from the traditional Chinese history, civil myths and legends, novels, etc. They direct adapt it, or just capture some of the concepts, or use the background of the myth, some only employ the figures. This transformations are so welcome and successful in that they show their own "specialty" in the field of animation. This paper introduces the development of Japanese animation, analyzes how the Japanese animation creation successfully use the Chinese traditional literary themes and gives the possilbe reasons. I conclude that in order to ensure Chinese animation develop, one important point is to change our arrogant attitude to the traditional culture and try our best to protect it, and accelerate the cultural and market integration,.We should tell the folk story with modern language. This is the significance that Japanese animation experience can give us. The contemporary animation cannot develop without the inheritance and innovation of traditional culture.
