Wangcheng is a county in the northeast of Hunan province and across the Xiangjiang River. The superior geography position offers advantages for the cultural communication between Wangcheng and other cities. After absorbing and referring to the shadow play in other areas, the Wangcheng shadow play engenders its own style and characteristic. It was very popular and well-known as the firework of Liuyang.This article uses the historical literature and fieldwork to do some researches about the Wangcheng shadow play. The article is composed of three parts: introduction, text and epilogue. The text have six chapters:In the first part, it introduces the origin of Chinese shadow play and how to form and develop in Wangcheng. The Chinese shadow play had been recorded in the literature as early as Song dynasty. Since introduced into Hunan Province, the shadow play has four styles, and Wangcheng Shadow Play belongs to Changsha style. The second part discusses the sects of Wangcheng Shadow Play and career of two typical actors, Mr. He Derun and Mr. Xia Shaochun. The third part, which is the key part of this article, study the features of Wangcheng Shadow Play' s performance in the aspects of the structure of stage, the composing of team, the time and situation of performance, taboo and jargon, the process of performance, recompense. The forth part discusses Wangcheng shadow play in terms of music in common mode, chiang plate and Music Plate. I do some research on the characteristic of Wangcheng shadow play' s play in the fifth part. The last chapter focused on the types, making methods and designing of models of Wangcheng Shadow Play. There are three types of Wangcheng Shadow Play's shadow: shadow-screen,shadow people and properties. These shadow can be divided into paper and leather due to the materials, so the making methods of models differ.
