The deep influence that regional culture has exerted on the writer's creation is showed in the external forms of a literary work, such as content, subject and language. Moreover, it affects the writer's internal personality, esthetic sentiment and mode of thinking. The famous writer Tian Han plays a decisive role in the history of modern literature in China. Regarded as the founder of Chinese modern drama, Tian Han brightly shines in the field of drama. His early works is characterized with his peculiar romantic color with mysterious style. In his mature works, he adopts the realistic style, following closely social reality and the life of average people. Tian Han is an unique character in the history of Chinese modern literature. From the aspect of Hunan culture, this thesis uses Tian Han as a case to systematically study in detail the relationship between the regional culture and literary creation, attempting in a specific-to-general logic.The introduction explores the theory concerning the relationship between regional culture and the creative individuals, and meanwhile, summarizes the associations between Tian Han and Hunan culture.Chapter One mainly analyzes the connotation and specialty of Hunan culture, and briefly arranges the exited definition of Hunan culture, on which the viewpoint of the author of this thesis is based. A continuation of Chu culture from the period before Qin Dynasty, Hunan culture is followed by the realistic "Hunan School," with romanticism and pragmaticism as it key spiritual essences.Chapter Two studies the influences of Hunan culture's romanticism on the creation of Tian Han's works from the following three aspects: the Qu Yuan-style lyrical monologue, the heavy tragic pathos and the typical local colors.Chapter Three emphasizes the impacts of Hunan culture's pragmaticism also from three facets. It influences on Tian han's attentions to social reality, on his firmly thought of "plead for justice on behalf of the people" and on his keen awareness of people's miseries.Chapter Four explores the influences of Hunan drama on Tian Han's career as a playwright and Tian Han's great contributions to the development of drama in his native town.Chapter Five focuses on the effect of Hunan culture on the writer's idiosyncracy, which is much embodied by the indomitable character of Hunan people showed in Tian Han. This character has indirect impact on his creation.This thesis concludes with the significance of this topic and looks forward to the further studies on regional culture and literary creation.
