The V-R Construction "V Man" And The Research Of Interrelated Problems

There are kinds of V-R constructions in the modern Chinese, but this thesis select only one of them to study, which is "v man". This thesis mainly uses the Three Flats and some theories such as the Cognitive linguistics, then delineates the characteristics of "v man" and the interrelated problems, including current and previous depictions, and gives some explanations. The thesis is divided into five chapters, and chapter 1 to 3 is the main content.The first chapter mainly discusses the syntactic and semantic characteristics of "v man". Firstly, we analyze the semantic attributes, and we get two different structures "v man1" and "v man2". At the one time, "v" is also divided into "v₁" and "v₂". Furthermore, we study "v"'s semantic characteristic, and we think that most of "v₁" is relative to [+extensity], [+estate] and [+accrete], but some isn't. However, "v₂"'s scope is very extensive, and it commonly has the characters of [+initiative] and [+continuance]. At last, we probe into the semantic constitution and existent sentence of "v man". In the light of cognitive ideas, we discuss why the objective can't be decorated by amount component.The second chapter, based on the materials of the Ancient Chinese, we analyze the appearance and evolution of "v man1" and "v man2" in detail. The argument is that they come from the series verbs (V-V) construction. They experienced a long time, appeared in Tang dynasty, and were widely used in Song dynasty. There is different that "v man1" developed rapidly once its appearance, but "v man2" didn't until modern Chinese.In the third chapter, referring to some related study previously, we classify the figure of material space in the sentences of "v man1". We get four kinds of figure: line, surface, area, cubage, which is illuminated by imago charts. Moreover, we discuss the metaphor space, and classify them into five kinds, which are apparatus, time, thinking, feel and the others.Although our study isn't enough for all aspects such as width or depth, it may be useful for us to understand and apply the V-R Constructions to some extant, and it also does well to the study of language acquisition for foreign students.
