The study of the history of Chinese must be based on the detailed and reliable grammatical research of a monograph. The Book of Song Dynasty, written by Shen Yue, is the most integrated history recode of Song Dynasty which is now available. The material in this book is highly trustworthy and comprehensive, well representing the popular language style of that period. Therefore, the Book of Song Dynasty is significant language material for the study of the Middle Ages Chinese . At present, researchers have been paying much attention to collation, collection and hermeneutic on historical documents , while the grammatical research on these documents is far from enough .The quantity of adverb is the most one in that of all the Chinese function words and it is an extremely internal imbalanced category. The study on the adverbs in the Middle Ages Chinese is an important respect of Chinese grammar research .Therefore, my thesis is intendeds to focus on the adverbs from the Book of Song Dynasty.We introduce the definition of adverb, the difference between adverb and the other parts of speech . Also, we introduce the classification of adverbs here. We fully describes and analyses the usage and distribution of the adverbs in the Book of Song Dynasty. There are 632 adverbs, which are divided into eight categories. We make an overall systematic description and classification of adverbs , trying to draw the outline of basic aspect of it.We study the problem mainly in lasted and altogether angel.We make comparatively detailed analyse on monosyllable adverb, double syllable adverb which emerged in the Middle Ages in the Book of Song Dynasty. We compare it with the zhan guo ce in the accident time .The analysis of the development of the adverbs in the Book of Song Dynasty and revealing its position in the history of Chinese grammar through historical comparision and synchronic study. Research suggests these adverbs have an inheriting and developing system. They reflect the disyllabic feature of the Middle Ages Chinese in some degree.We select several representative adverbs which emerged in the Book of Song Dynasty to make case study, trying to give a brief account of the process and causation of their grammaticalization.
