We know that the main current of the Chinese tradition culture is the Confucianism culture and the core of the Confucianism culture is its philosophy. Actually, the core of the Confucianism philosophy is the spirit of The Mean . The Mean have achieved the great Chinese Nation, but today we refuse The Mean firmly. People usually mistake The Mean for conservatism which having no principle, but in fact, this is not real spirit of The Mean. So what is the spirit of The Mean exactly? It does not imply the obturation, on the contrary, it represents a kind of actively enterprising spirit and liberal spirit. The route of it pursuing is not so-called eclecticism, on the contrary, the Mean insists on the truth ,namely "The Way", and doesn't compromise with the improbity in any time. This kind of real Confucianism essence ,namely the spirit of The Mean, is a kind of perfect virtue exiting in the heart of the gentleman. The gentleman becomes a carrier of the spirit of The Mean. On a certain meaning, the way of achieving a gentleman is the way of practicing The Mean, the gentleman also becomes the ideal personality that Confucianism pursuing. So, what is the way of becoming a gentleman ?This paper reviews the constituents and characteristics of gentleman, combines with its influence on the Chinese tradition culture and assesses its value from a historic perspective. On discussing the above-mentioned problems and taking《The Mean》as the foundation, this paper reviews the aggressive meaning of the The Mean and the importmant fuctions of The Mean in the process of becoming a gentleman. I hope that this paper can re-awaken the people to inherit and expand the precious heritage of the Chinese traditional culture by analyzing Cautiousness, The time-Dependent mean, honesty etc.
