Deixis, a common linguistic phenomenon in the course of human communication, is an important branch of pragmatic. Social deixis is a key part of deixis and plays a core role in indicating social status and identity and in reflecting different cultural backgrounds. Thus the translation of social deixis is not only a linguistic and semiotic transference but also an important cultural communication. From the perspective of linguistics, the traditional deictic theories aim at the description of its classification and function, basic property and sense, text analysis based on English and Chinese deixis comparison, which lacks theoretical depth and systematicness. The studies on social deixis are confined to the comparison between English and Chinese, and scarcely refer to the translation theories. In view of the problems, the author tries to discuss the relationship between social deixis translation and cultural transmission. This paper is intended to run as follows.Chapter One is devoted to the social deixis translation and cultural transmission from the perspective of culture and social deixis meanings, and points out the problems and difficulties in the process of the social deixis translation to explore the necessity of the research. Chapter Two puts forwards the theoretical framework of the paper. The theories of functional equivalence, skopos theory, coherence and cohesion, cultural adaptation and receptor theories and their relevance to the social deixis translation are presented.Chapter Three covers the representation and function of social deixis, as well as its features.Chapter Four discusses the factors that influence the social deixis to demonstrate the relevant translation methods and strategies to achieve the ultimate purpose of translation.Chapter Five is to reconsider the relationship between the social deixis translation and cultural transmission from the perspectives of cultural default and compensation. In this paper, case studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical framework. The literary works selected mainly include The Dream of Red Mansions by Cao Xueqin , Family by Ba Jin, The Sunrise by Cao Yu, At Middle Age by Chen Rong and so on, which aim at demonstrating the methods and strategies in social deixis translation to achieve the effect of cultural transmission to the great extent.
