When translating Greek mythology, we usually need large amounts of information on Greek mythology, such as the relationship of various characters of Greek mythology, the background of the Trojan War and accurate translation of names of places and characters in Greek mythology. There are many differences between Greek mythology and Chinese culture. In this paper, the translator of the novel Tales of Troy focuses on the discussion on cultural default and compensation strategies targeted at young readers. This paper starts with a brief introduction of Skopos theory and further elaborates on how Skopos theory instructs the translation of children’s literature. Then the paper probes into the issue that when to compensate for cultural default in order to convey the right values to young people, and to ensure that young readers are willing to read, and love to read the translated version and understand the original meaning. Then the paper further discusses the influence of the differences on children of translation, and emphasize that compensation for cultural default is necessary to help young readers to understand the culture of the original story and culture as well as establish correct values and outlook on life. Finally the paper would explain how to use compensation strategies to translate the source text Tales of Troy.My view of all these compensation strategies can be boiled down to one concise conclusion that compensation strategies can both fill up the textual gap and help young readers better understand the meaning of the original text. Thus, it can not only retain the original essence of the original text, but also help young readers establish correct values.
