Xie Bingying is a legendary woman-solder writer in the history of Chinese modern literature. In the process of more than 70 years'writing, she has left us with rich spiritual heritage. Though she gets the rude materials from her own experience, we still can see the influence of western romantic literature by reading carefully her early works. In view of forms of literature, the epistolary style and the autobiographic note conducts that she likes in her works derive from Gothe's The Sorrow of Young Werther and Rosseau's the Confession, and these characteristics are conspicuous in The War Dairies and A Woman Soldier's Own Story: The Autobiography of Xie Bingying. Viewed from the contents of literature, the basic concepts of western romantic literature such as liberty and equality, rebel spirit, individualism and idealism reverberat in her early writings: she immediately cries out"Liberty is more important than life."; she is strongly against the feudal tradition, social darkness and Japanese imperialism; she independently deals with various problems of study, life, marriage, career and so forth; she pursues her goals continuously and struggles perseveringly for her ideal.Xie Bingying grew up in the"May 4th"period. This cultural background, revolution trends and her personalities unconsciously make her choices among tradition, reality and romance. The union of these factors causes fundamentally his preference to the epistolary style and the autobiographic note conducts, and also decides her romantic tendency in thoughts. In the process of the dual combination of tradition and reality, east and west, she discards the negative influence of the extreme individualism of western romantic literature on her works and has the clear and vigorous styles which other women writers in her times had not, what's more, she also realizes the good combination of realism and romanticism elements. Of course, her taking active in reality to a certain extent limits her further study of western romantic literature, especially the aesthetic elements of it. Much political concepts are directly expressed in her early works and thus these works are short of the tensile stress of imagery. Meanwhile, due to her superficial narrations and reports, she also lackes the pursuit of ultimate significance in literature.
