Furthermore, the invention of painted pottery is a most splendid age in Chinese history. It expresses our ancestors' complicated aesthetic opinions rather than single demands. It also reflects the profound cultural meaning of Chinese pottery.In the late Neolithic Age, the technology of pottery manufacturing had been relatively ripe. According to the archaeological discoveries, most sites are located in the drainage area of the Yellow River. Among them, Yangshao and Majiayao painted potteries are renowned for their wonder and variety. These painted potteries are beautifully shaped, bright-colored, elaborately made and specially ornamented. Besides, the varieties of patterns are widely dispersed. Hence, it is undoubtedly a bright pearl in Chinese history. The painted pottery consists two parts: the pottery itself and its pattern, which shows the main difference between the painted pottery and the common pottery in its property and function. That is to say, the painted pottery is the unity of daily utensil and handicraft article, the unity of practical function and art. The painted pottery shows us its profound meanings through its different kinds of decoration form combinations. And it also illustrates technology and craftsmanship. Sharp cultural features of different tribes are manifested.The artistic styles of painted pottery give people artistic enjoyment. Our forefathers' emotion, wish and taste are embodied. Its cultural connotations and concise artistic beauty play an important role in the history of Chinese arts and crafts. This thesis will focus on the study of the shapes and patterns of painted pottery, revealing its rich cultural connotations and art characteristics.
