Hu Yuan, the distinguished philosopher and educationalist of Song dynasty, who played an important role in the renaissance of Confucianism during the Song dynasty. Song Yuan Xue An·An Ding Xue An(a complete works of history of thinking of Song and Yuan dynasty) indicates that "the renaissance of learning of Song dynasty,Hu Yuan and Sun Fu,are the most important ones.Philosophers, such as Chen Yi and Zhu Xi all regarded this as correct." As an educationalist, his practice of education has brought a significant influence. He did not agree with the style of learning of Tang dynasty, and thus replaced it with the doctrine of classical books and technology as the important course. He was once as a professor of Suzhou and Huzhou, and taught in Zhejiang province. As a result,he played an important role in the renaissance of Confucianism. So,is regarded as the one who established the way of teaching in the Song dynasty. Now,many scholars consider Hu Yuan as a great educationalist, however, they all forget that he is also a great philosopher, especially his thinking on Yi-Learning.In the history of development of the Chinese Yi-ology,it is usually divided into two academic schools:image-number(interpreting Zhou yi by images and numbers) and Yi Li(interpreting Zhou Yi with philosophical connotations) philosophical school. For this development,it is recorded in detail in the Si Ku Quan Shu Zong Mu:"the book of Zhou Yi,which indicates the way of human by means of the way of Tian. What Zuo Zhuan records divinations may be the legacy of the original one.The Confucians of the Han dynasty claim to interpret Zhou yi by images and numbers, which is not very far. While Jing Fang and Jiao Yanshou interpret Zhou Yi by auspicious signs, and then Chen Tuan and Shao Yong use He-pictures and Luo-books instead, these methods all make the Zhou Yi seem very far from the practical use.Wang Bi deserts the image-number at all and interprets it by Daoism,so the Yi Li philosophical school comes into being. Furthermore,Hu Yuan and Cheng Yi begin to interpreting Zhou Yi by Confucianism. The next one,Li Guang and Yang Wanli, who interpret it by historical events and persons.Consequently,Zhou Yi gradually becomes more and more complicated, this two schools and its six branches refute each other.Besides, the way of Zhou Yi is very huge, which can embrace everything of the world in it,such as astronomy, geology, music, strategic, mathematics, even the alchemy could takes Zhou Yi as its fundamental theory. Therefore, the doctrine of Zhou Yi becomes more and more complicated." From that,we can see it clearly that Hu Yuan is the first one who use the Confucianism to interpret the Zhou Yi in the Song dynasty,so he takes a important place in the history of Yi-ology.His thinking of Yi-ology is completely records in Zhou Yi Kou Yi,which was edited by his disciple Ni Tian-yin in the process of courses. This paper will do a basic research on its thinking of Yi-ology,and it divide into five chapters. In the first chapter,I will give a brief introduction about Hu Yuan and his doctrine. In his life,I pay more attention on his educational practice.Actually,Hu Yuan spends all his life in the school, consequently, his thought mainly spread by means of his teaching. Moreover,I give a short introduction on his works, especially his Yi-ology work Zhou Yi Kou Yi.In the second chapter discusses the Hu Yuan's outlook of Zhou Yi.He has the different view on the formation of Zhou Yi and regards the changeableness as the only meaning of Zhou Yi.Furthermore, this part discusses Hu Yuan's thinking on Zhou Yi and its special meaning. In the third chapter mainly discusses his thought of Yi-ology.Hu Yuan usually interpret it in a easy way,so indicating the way of human though the way of Tian become his most obviously characteristic, what here pointed the way of human just means understand how to resolve the relation between the Lord and his subjects. Besides,he usually quotes historical events and persons to interpret it.In addition,he brings Confucianism into the theory of Zhou Yi,and quotes many examples from The Analects of Confucian,Mencius, and The Doctrine of the Mean. This is why he was called the first one who used the Confucianism to interpret Zhou Yi.In fact,he also inherits the legacy of image-number school of Confucianism of Han dynasty, especially on the doctrine of Gua-Qi and Yin-Yang.In the fourth chapter,I discuss his criticism on Kong Ying-da's Zhou Yi Zheng Yi. In the style of interpreting Zhou Yi,Hu Yuan inherit much from Kong Ying-da,but he also has his own views. Therefore,I find all of them from Zhou Yi Kou Yi,and compare with the thought of Zhou Yi Zheng Yi,then we will discover it clearly the difference between them, especially the characteristic of Hu Yuan interpreting Zhou Yi by Confucianism. In the last chapter discusses the historical place of Hu Yuan's thinking of Yi-ology from the history of whole thinking and the history of Yi-ology respectively. Then discusses its influence especially on his student Cheng Yi.
