Researching proper names is still continuing now. From Mill to Kripke, proper names have been given different interpretations in the process of the development. In these explanations, Kripke's thinking is more innovative. The focus of this paper is researching Kripke's theory of proper names on the basis of his philosophical thinking, and on the background of semantics of possible worlds and essentialism. The paper is divided into three parts:Part I: Kripke's theory of proper names is educed on the background of synthesis and analysis of former researched proper names.Part II: Kripke's theory of proper names is given a detailed statement in order to clear up misunderstandings in academe.Part III: Kripke's theory of proper names is evaluated for trying to show its fairly significant academic contribution, and establish its important position in academe. In addition, on the basis of theoretical expositions, its values and limitations are detailed analyzed so as to find out the inspirations on the research of Philosophy of Logic.Kripke's theory of proper names has changed the traditional theory of descriptions, occupying a dominant position on the issue of reference. It provides a new idea, and broadens the research field of inference. Kripke emphasizes the social and historical factors; moreover, he points out that inference is a kind of practice completed by objects and speakers together. His theory has fundamentally changed the view that the traditional meaning theory is thought meaning seems to exist in the individual mind.
