In this thesis, the author selects Kripke's theory of proper names. As his major study, the author tries on the one hand to grasp the content and attribution of Kripke's theory;on the other hand,to grasp the development of the theory as a whole and to carry through to the end the insight that terms have definite meaning. This thesis mainly explores the following three aspects:Part One is an introduction of the background of Kripke's theory. The objections to description theory give rise to the casual theory of reference. Here include three point:(1) Frege's thought of proper name's sense and reference(2)Russell's theory of proper names.(3)Sole's theory of family-description.Part Two is an account of Kripke's causal theory of reference.I will confirm the co ncepts of proper name and descriptions and delineate them in contrast with traditional th eory of reference.I will try to examine:(1) Formal semantics of possible words.(2) A cr itique of the theory of clustering descriptions of proper names.(3) Proper name and des criptions.(4) The theory of rigid designator.Part Three is an Evaluation of Kripke's theory.Mainly,I will explore it from the following three aspects;(1)Showing the significance of Kripe's theory.(2)Reviewing to give the limitations of Kripke's causal theory of reference.(3)Suggesting a scheme to reconstruct Kripke's theory of proper names. Conclusion is points of the author on proper names and a new comment on Kripke's contribution to the theory of proper names.
