Nowadays, sports competitions and sports activities have attracted the attention of billions of people. Through reading newspapers and watching TV, the researcher finds out that there are a great number of metaphors used in the sports reports; furthermore, the types of metaphors in sports reports are in variety. However, the quantity of the studies of metaphor in sports reports is very small; and the previous studies are limited in the qualitative analysis. Thus the researcher wants to conduct a study on the basis of Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory by using the qualitative analysis as well as the quantitative analysis. The data in this thesis are collected from China Daily, and are classified into twelve groups. Through the analysis, the researcher finds out that: structural metaphors are of the highest frequency; the mapping from the source domain to the sports domain is systematic; some of the metaphors in the sports reports are conventional and used unconsciously, such as win, defeat, victory, performance, lead etc. These support Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory of understanding an unfamiliar target domain through a familiar source domain.
