English particle verbs and Korean compound verbs are the ordinary language category in the English language and the Korean language, which represent the concept that is called phrasal verbs: structurally, a verb is combined with one or two auxiliary words (particle in English, another verb in Korean); semantically, each component loses or weakens its original meaning and these components affect each other to form a new lexical and semantic unit.By collecting and analyzing a great number of data of English and Korean phrasal verbs, the thesis not only contributes to classifying the phrasal verbs into different groups according to the structural characteristics, but also makes a detailed description of the structure, the semantic features of the components and the matching process between the components of phrasal verbs, and tries to analyze the reasons and laws of the similarities and differences between English and Korean phrasal verbs. The conclusions are as follows: Firstly, English and Korean phrasal verbs accord with the usage-based model in cognitive grammar. Secondly, Korean phrasal verbs are much more productive than English ones. Thirdly, the formations of English and Korean phrasal verbs are affected by the development of human cognition, and relate to the semantic category of the components. The matching processes of the components of phrasal verbs between the two languages share the same rule.English particle verbs and Korean compound verbs are used frequently in the English language and the Korean language. The form of phrasal verbs in English is a form of a phrase, and a form of a compound word in Korean. However, there are many similarities between the structures and the matching processes of the components. Comparing English and Korean phrasal verbs can provide some evidence for the research on "Universal Grammar" , and will be of great help to the teaching of phrasal verbs.
