"Town Within City" Orientation, New Town Integratation

The process of the establishment, development and evolution of urban construction which has continued for thousands of years reflects the achievements of human's space and environment construction as well as our concepts of culture and art; it's the evidence for the development of human civilization. With the city development and the rapid growth of urban population, there appear an increasing number of urban problems. The construction of new cities has become a way of relieving urban pressure and expanding urban space. However, due to the imbalance of rapid development of urban area in comparison with the slow development of the suburban area, a situation of"old inside and new outside"came into being. So the identification and the way of development of the old towns has become a common problem in many cities in the course of building new cities.In combination with knowledge of the related subjects, this dissertation is going to study and analyze the space condition of the"town within city"mode and explore the direction and characteristics of development of the"town within city"mode by dissecting the material structure, the social structure, and industrial structure of the old city from the angle of the science of environmental design. With the example of the"town within city"mode of Wuxi Taihu new city, the author aims at studying the problem of integrating the old and the new cities in the process of layout planning and programming of the Binhu District. This dissertation will discuss some strategies of old"town within city"s characteristic environmental design in the layout planning and programming, and put forward some key points of space development in"town within city"mode and some characteristic strategies for development. According to the integral design of the city, this dissertation tries to find some constructive suggestions to exhibit the traits of old city.
