This dissertation is an attempt to approach grammatical metaphor in English-Chinese translation of international political articles from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. In terms of critical discourse analysis, linguistic forms are determined by their social functions and structural differences reflect ideological differences, which in turn serve to maintain and reinforce these differences. Any news discourse is biased and can be regarded as a combination of the literal meaning and implicit meaning. Therefore, discourse analysis should include within its scope of study not only the content, but also the organization and arrangement of the discourse so as to explore the connections between language use and the social and political contexts in which it occurs. Two types of Grammatical Metaphor, viz., ideational and interpersonal metaphor are dealt with in the proposed study. Through an analysis on ways where the two types of grammatical metaphor arise in the international political news selected from New York Times, a certain amount of information is found lost or covered in the course of choosing metaphorical expressions. The lost or hidden information would otherwise reveal the political purpose of the media in question as well as their ideology. The translator of English political articles should therefore have political sensitivity and adopt relevant translation strategies to compensate for the lost information and reveal the hidden information so that news media in our country can effectively shoulder their responsibility in their guidance of public opinion.Based on the critical discourse analysis on the grammatical metaphors in international political news, the author proposes suggestions on translation of grammatical metaphors as follows: 1) to make the identity of the doer explicit in the TL Version; 2) provide the information on circumstances of the process in the TL version; 3) to reveal the illusive and uncertain proposition; 4) to compensate for modality source. The present study is a tentative analysis on the E-C translation of grammatical metaphors in international political news. The author hopes that this could help newsreaders better decode the grammatical metaphors and help translators to improve their political sensitivity. |
