An Analysis On The Communication Strategies Used By Larry King In Comparison Of The Communication Strategies Used By Second Language Learners

Communication strategies are important in helping people communicate effectively and successfully. Communication strategies refer to the means employed by language users to overcome communication breakdowns. This thesis aims to examine the communication strategies employed by a famous CNN's host, Larry King in the famous talk show program, Larry King Live. The purpose of the study is to analyze communication strategies adopted in successful communication. Besides, it also sheds light on second language learning and teaching and communication. It is conducive to both first language speakers and second language learners.Based on Yule's taxonomy (1997) of communication strategies with subtype strategies from Wannaruk (2002), the present study explores the frequency of different strategies used by Larry King in his interviews, followed by a thorough analysis of these usages with ample examples. Based on the comparison between the communication strategies used by Larry King and by L2 learners, both the similarities and differences between these two groups are presented with tentative explanation.
