The new era officialdom novels reflect the contemporary Chinese social life since the 1990s artistically, which have vividly depicted the contemporary thousands of officialdom with the sharp and careful brushwork, inspected the social life, explored of the depth of human nature, and promoted the prosperity of literature of 1990s. However, a long term, the officialdom novels have not been enough put emphasis on in the literary circles. The researches into these works are confined in political analysis as well as the specific cases, which lack a more in-depth reflection of the ideological and aesthetic interpretation. On the basis of previous researches, the purpose of this thesis is to make every effort to analyze ideas and artistic content and features of the existing problems of the new era officialdom novels in order to award the new era officialdom novels the right position and evaluation.This thesis is divided into four chapters.Chapter I is about the origin and development of officialdom novels. This chapter defines the scope and subject matter from the perspective of officialdom, reviews the history of the officialdom novels and briefly analyzes the main reasons for the rise of the artistic characteristics of officialdom novels of the different periods.Chapter II is about the reasons for the significance and prosperity of the new era officialdom novels. This chapter discusses the reasons for the prosperity of the new era officialdom novels from the perspectives of the creation of realism tradition, readers'psychology and writers'mission, at the same time, explores the significance of the new era officialdom novels from the perspectives of reality and culture.Chapter III is about the aesthetic characteristics of the new era officialdom novels. This chapter is composed of three parts: the theme, character-portrayal and narrative art of the new era officialdom novels, which are the main points that this thesis wants to explore. The theme of the new era officialdom novels is to expose corruption, reveal officials'inner world, and probe the socio-cultural psychology behind officialdom. As for the depicting the characters, such novels not only portray the positive characters with distinctive characters, but also the negative characters with complex human nature. More important, they show the gray existence of the people in officialdom. As for the narrative arts, the thesis will make a brief analysis on the narrative perspective, the narrative structure and the narrative discourse of officialdom novels.Chapter IV is about the weaknesses of the new era officialdom novels. This chapter affirms that the new era officialdom novels have made great achievements in the arts. At the same time, point out their problems from the perspective of the depth of the theme, the images the multidimensional nature of the characters and the narrative mode of the new era officialdom novels.
