This thesis attempts to prove the function of narrow reading theoretically and enrich the English teaching methods to English teaching on reading practically by testing the influence of narrow reading on the English reading ability and interest of college students through quantitative research which mainly deals with the relationship between the usage of narrow reading and the performance and interests of English reading.The experiment includes four items:1) the influence of narrow reading on reading performance of advanced students, 2) the influence of narrow reading on reading performance of less-advanced students, 3) the influence of narrow reading on reading interest of advanced students, 4) the influence of narrow reading on reading interest of less-advanced students. The subjects are 82 students from Class One and Class Two of Textile Designing Department in Shandong Silk and Textile Vocational College. They have been under this experiment for one semester, all the data are analyzed through SPSS software base.The result shows that narrow reading contributes to the improvements of reading performance and interest of students, expands their background knowledge and increases their demand for more English reading. So in English teaching, we can offer less-advanced students more reading materials with lower difficulty to improve their reading scores and interest, so as to boost their interest in English learning to get higher performance in English.
