| Umberto Eco, who is philosopher, historian, literary critic and esthetician, etc., and who is the best-known symbolic linguist in the world. He has become a symbol of knowledge and education in Europe. In China, there are lots of English version of Eco'works, but academic research just starts and there are few dissertations with special works, which does not match with his most influence and literary status in overseas at present. However, Eco who has profound knowledge, have achieved a lot in many areas and pays much attention to the whole humanbeing will and must be influencing. This paper tries to explain and read The Name of the Rose. The chapter one introduces the symbol of symbolic system-character, rose, and seven horns to explain that symbol represents foreign thing from the view of signifier , and the foreign thing can exist or be imaginary. Therefore, semiotics can be used to research lying thing . It demonstrates Eco's theory of semiotics as well as his scholar wisdom. The chapter two shows the centre of knowledge and game from the way of his structure in organizing text. The chapter three directs the deepness of the novel and the enjoyment of game from the purpose of the text.
