Nearly a century, various linguists have researched text analysis from different angles. Finally they got a common view on the issue: research the coherent paragraph structures and the textual meanings in a certain context, and research the relationships between them. However, each text has its own feature, so we only need to analyze the more prominent aspect when we analyze a concrete text. This paper is an endeavor to carry on a functional analysis to text structure from semantic and pragmatic perspective, by which we can get some new views on text. That is, text, used as a form of human language, is a creative action of encoding and decoding which has structure and intention of its own, and therefore, the functional analysis of text structure should be a dynamic analysis which is multi-staged and multi-dimensional.Finally, through the relationship between cohesion and coherence as well as pragmatic analysis, this paper demonstrates that function determines text structure, and further the ways of our speech. Put another way, text structure reflects our ways of speech.
