The Sino-US relationship has an important effect on China, the USA and even the situation of the whole world. In order to handle the Sino-US relationship much better, it is necessary to straighten out the United States'policies toward China from the sequence of history. Through the ages of the United States'policies toward China, the most complex period is during the Anti-Japanese War. So having a clear idea of its policies and the changes during this period has referential meaning in dealing with the current Sino-US relationship. From the "9.18" incident to October 1938, the United States adopted the traditional isolation policy for the fact that Japan invaded China, looking on China's trouble with indifference. But with Japan's escalating invasion into China, the interests of the United States in Southeast Asia, the Pacific area and its national security were being seriously threatened. In order to make the battlefield mainly in China and meanwhile prevent China from connecting with the Soviet Union, the United States'isolation policy gradually changed into the generous helping China policy. In 1943, the allied forces made continuous victories on the battlefield, and Stalin also agreed to send troops to fight against Japan; the victory of the anti-fascist war could be expected soon. Then the Chinese battlefield became less important and the United States policy toward China also begun to shift to tough interventionism. When the victory of the war was approaching, the contradictions between Chinese Kuomintang and the Communist Party were becoming more apparent. In order to ensure a unified, strong pro-US regime in the future, the United States made every effort to get the Soviet Union to promise to help the KMT government, and started the helping Jiang Jieshi intermediation policy in China. The United States'policies toward China and its evolvement during the Anti-Japanese War show that it always sets its national interests as the highest standard in its attitudes toward China and its policies are also influenced by its domestic factors and China's political and economic status. Therefore we must properly handle the current Sino-US relationship, insisting on the principles and flexibility at the same time, constantly deepening our political and economic system reform, improving the socialism market economic system and developing democratic politics, analyzing the national interests of the United States thoroughly and the process of the coming up of its policy. Only in this way can we safeguard the steady development of Sino-US relationship and achieve the goal of mutual benefit.
