Recently , anaphora research is a hot topics of contemporary linguistics as a phenomenon. In China, anaphora is called reference by Liao Qiuzhong. Xiu Jiujiu analyzed the type, characteristic, distribution and constraints of Np anaphora. He developed the ideational system for Np anaphora. On the basis of these researches, this paper analyzes the textual phenomenon of time noun for anaphora, and discusses the type, pragmatic function and constraints of time noun. After the study we have reached the following conclusions:1)The type of time noun. The anaphora of time noun comprises direct anaphora, partial anaphora and indirect anaphora which includes synonym, superordination/hyponymy and the structure of pronoun.2)Pragmatic function of time noun.â‘ Direct anaphora: The purpose of using two or two more direct anaphora in a clause or subsequent clause is aspiring after extraordinary rhetroic. We call this "reiteration".â‘¡Partial anaphora : Partial anaphora can bring different meanings and tell readers other new informations. In addition, in some case, when we use the antecedent in the second time, the generic time antecedent becomes individual because of expression of the content. So we use "this + time noun" or "that + time noun" to be anaphora.â‘¢Indirect anaphora.a. Synonym: It can make the expression vivid.b. Superordination/Hyponymy: Although the semantic range of hyponymy is lower than superordination, the semantic connotation of hyponymy is richer than hyponymy. So when the antecedent is superordination and hyponymy is anaphors, it conveys the specific information.c. The structure of pronoun: The structure of pronoun for anaphora is concision.3)Constraints of time noun for anaphora.â‘ The relationship between constraintsTime noun is simple and most of them are semantic component. The relationship between time nouns constrain the anaphora form. We find that we will choose direct anaphora when the relative time nouns are appearance in a clause by turns. It can make the expression clear.â‘¡Syntactic constraintsWhen time noun is attribute, we choose direct anaphora or partial anaphora. When time noun is head word, we choose direct anaphora also.â‘¢Distance constraintsThis kind of constraints fit direct anaphora, partial anaphora and the structure of pronoun for anaphora.â‘£Number constraintIf there are two more antecedents, we incline to use direct anaphora or partial anaphora to avoid dark expression.
