Theories of receptive aesthetics make it possible for the readers to construct different meanings and forms of a literary work in different historical stages, in the meantime, they demand readers to put an individual literary work into the literary series that it belongs to, so that readers can look into the historical status and significance of the literary work in the context of multiple literary experience. Readers accepted Shui Hu stories in the following two ways, one reflects in the production of Shui Hu stories, which started from Southern Song Dynasty when authors telling the stories of Shui Hu to the audience in their speech, till 20th century when Shui Hu stories were told by various of media. One of the marvelous achievements in this period of time is the emergence of the Classic Outlaws of the Marsh. Another way people accepted Shui Hu stories reflected in the criticism history of Shui Hu stories. It started from Loyalism theory that emerged in Ming Dynasty, and it evolved into the multi-elucidation pattern in modern times. JIN, Shengtan is one of the prominent critic in this process. Two approaches of Shui Hu stories acceptance pose their acceptance chain diachronically and respectively, composing an integrated acceptance history of Shui Hu stories. In this thesis , I put the works and commentaries that related to Shui Hu into a consolidated, grand and continuous literary context of acceptance history of Shui Hu stories. On the basis of Receptive Aesthetics Theories, this thesis attempts to explain the acceptance relationships between works and writers during the process of acceptance of Shui Hu stories by abstract, full and accurate analysis.
