Since ancient times in the development of literature, there have been lots of descriptions related to birth. However, it seems a little silence on the criticism of "birth" in Chinese contemporary literature. Each author has his own purpose to convey some information, when describing the birth in his works. In view of this, this thesis precisely taking the representative novels of 1990s which described the birth as the main research object, interpreting their diverse descriptions of the birth. The thesis studied the description of birth in different literary works in the theory of humanism from multi-level perspectives. In the 1990s' novels, with the description of birth authors have expressed their rich meaning: some writers shaped the image of mother through the mother's suffering and fate; some writers described the new born baby's fate, who is protagonist of "the birth"; in addition to that, they might concern about both the fate of mother and their children; some others investigated the true meaning of survival or expressed the personal thinking of modern society. Because different author has his own purpose and intention, 1990s' novels related to birth assume different meaning of the above mentioned issues. However, by summing up these different forms of performance, something can be concluded that the literary description is returning to humanism. Ultimately, these performances are based on the concern of human's fate and existence.
