The Effect Of Side Preview Benefit In Object Persistence Representation

The object-reviewing paradigm based on 'Object Files' is an important experiment method, and the object-specific preview benefit (OSPB) is an important factor to decide the movements of object files in researches about object persistence representation. Because OSPB can induce response differences between new and old objects, faster to the old and slower to the new. And by this difference, researchers could decide whether OSPB exists and further more to decide the movements of object files. But in this research, we tried to prove that there is another factor which can induce response differences between different target locations. That's to say, in object-reviewing experiments, when matched target letter appears on the same side of its preview letter, left to left, right to right or top to top, bottom to bottom, it will be easier to response. It can be called side-specific preview benefit (SSPB). Through four experiments, the contributions of SSPB in object persistence representation and how it works with OSPB was researched. Experiment 1 researched SSPB in static mode to see weather it exists; Experiment 2 repeated two former researchers' experiments in dynamic mode, in order to validate SSPB effect. Experiment 3 designed a new pattern in which two objects cross-and-missed to further prove the consistence of object file's and object's movements; In Experiment 4 it is further observed that how SSPB behaved in a new condition. The results are:(1) The response time differences were induced by OSPB and SSPB, OSPB and SSPB work together in object-reviewing paradigm.(2) When OSPB and SSPB contributed to the same direction, Response time Difference was formulated by the sum of SSPB and OSPB. When they contribute to the different directions, Response time Difference was formulated by SSPB minus OSPB or OSPB minus SSPB, and that the response advantage appears at whether the same-object location or the same-side location was decided by the stronger one of SSPB and OSPB.(3) The movement of object files was consistent with conscious percepts.According to the above results, it is concluded that: (1) In the process of maintaining object persistence representation, object file is related with an area around the place where the object appears, not only with the accurate place where the object appears.(2) It is not enough to judge object file's movements by single response time difference.(3) SSPB is variable according to objects' space distribute and dynamic mode.
