Lexicon is the most active system of language, reflecting directly the developing of the society and its culture. So we can say, to some extent, lexicon is a mirror of culture. With the coming of the information society, as numerous new things spring out, neologisms add as fresh new blood to vocabulary. In the process of the communications and transmitting of information as well as culture between different countries and regions, mass media serve as a bridge. And news neologisms are playing a more and more significant role in international communication.However important as neologisms are, cultural differences between different countries and regions set barriers to the translations of them. The lexical gaps caused by cultural differences present themselves in nearly every field. The translation of news neologisms is not only that of language, but also that of culture. In translating practice, it is vital to clear the cultural barriers and to convey faithfully and smoothly the information from the source language.Researches at home and abroad concerning news neologisms have been increasing in the recent years, but most of them are limited on translating lexicon itself. Few discuss systematically the translation of neologisms from the perspective of their cultural connotations.This thesis, based on relative translating theories and practices, gives insight into the translating of neologisms in news from the perspective of cultural connotations. With large numbers of example from presses, it provides some translation tactics to deal with the difficulties caused by cultural barriers, so that the mass media can function better.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 serves as a brief introduction, pointing out the significance and value of composing the thesis. Then it explains in Chapter 2 some basic translation theories, stating briefly the developing of cultural translation at home and abroad, and then points out the internal relations between language, culture and news translation. Chapter 3 first gives an overview of neologisms, including its definition, origins and features; then it points out the presentations of cultural discrepancies in China and the west, followed by the list of some translating difficulties caused by different cultural connotations of neologisms in news. In Chapter 4, the thesis, via convincing examples from presses, suggests some translation methods to deal with the difficulties caused by cultural barriers. Finally it gives a conclusion of what has been discussed above, states the qualities a news translator should have, and points out the value of the thesis and what can still be improved concerning the problems mentioned in this thesis.
