The translator is one of the most decisive participants in translation. But his statusand function has been long ignored in Chinese and Western translation circle. To ourdelight, with the trend of “cultural turn” in translation, people’s horizon has been largelybroadened and the marginalized translator and his subjectivity have gradually come intoresearchers’ sight. German Skopostheory holds that the translation purpose instead of thesource text or the original writer decides the translation strategies, which is instructive fornews translation. Therefore, the Expo news translator can employ his subjectivity freelyso as to realize his translation purpose. Grounded on a thorough and detailed analysis ona wealth of Expo news translations, the author tries to find out how the Expo newstranslator has exerted his subjectivity during the translation process.This thesis is made up of four chapters. Chapter One is concerned with previousstudies on news translation and translators’ subjectivity. The theoretical framework of thisthesis—Skopostheory, as well as its application rules will be laid out in Chapter Two. InChapter Three, the author analyzes general characteristics of English news; in particularthe lexical and rhetorical characteristics of Expo news are analyzed. Chapter Four dealswith the manifestation of translator’s subjectivity in C-E Expo news translation. The firstpart of this chapter elaborates on the rich connotations of translator’s subjectivity:initiative and passivity of subjectivity. The second and third parts explores into thedemonstration of his subjectivity in translating cultural and textual elements in ShanghaiExpo news reports, from which the author has sorted out several useful translationstrategies for news translation: transliteration, explanatory translation, lexical variation,linguistic restructuring and textual trans-editing. The last part probes into the internal andexternal constraining factors against his subjectivity. Finally, the thesis reaches theconclusion that only when a news translator strikes a balance between his passivity andinitiative, could he make the most of his subjectivity to realize his translation skopos andpromote cultural communication between the east and the west.
