As a painting technique, ink painting emerged only about 100 years ago. In Chinese paintings, expression through color remained the mainstream before the Sui and Tang Dynasties, while the interest in color expression shrank after the Sui and Tang due to an aesthetic shift. The ink painting had become the mainstream after a long evolution in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, but color expression remained, and provided internal conditions for the emergence of the modern color ink painting. The paper argues that judging from the social context in which the color ink painting emerged, it conformed to the aesthetic needs in new historical conditions and the megtrend of social transformations, though, apparently, it appeared because of the stimulation of western painting. In today's diversified realm of painting, painters should explore the color ink painting techniques and better represent our state of mind and artistic style with the visual form of color ink.
