The Influence Transfer Has On Vocabulary Study

Since the study of vocabulary is always the focus of English study,many well-known linguists have put great emphasis and done much research on it.Recent years high schools have been carrying out new curriculum reforms.According to the new English curriculum standard,qualified high school students should reach the eighth level of vocabulary.The requirements are as follows:1.students can understand and express different functions, intentions and manners;2.they can employ different vocabulary to describe complex notions,behavior and characteristics;3.they should learn to use 3000 words and 400-500 idioms and expressions.There is no doubt that the new English curriculum standard has a higher requirement for students' ability in grasping vocabulary,quality and quantity as well. In addition,new English curriculum standard proposes that the teachers should help students develop proper study strategy of their own,which is helpful for students to follow the right direction in English study and learn vocabulary efficiently.Moreover,proper strategy of vocabulary study is also important in forming independent study ability of the students,which is beneficial for their lifelong study.In view of realistic vocabulary teaching and learning,it is monotonous and of low efficiency,This paper elaborates on the influence of transfer,which is a common psychological phenomenon,on vocabulary study. It discusses how transfer influences the learning of vocabulary in various aspects: pronunciation,spelling,meaning,cultural and emotional connotations.Through concrete illustrations,this paper has a further discussion about how we can use transfer to enhance the efficiency of vocabulary study.At the same time it points out that negative transfer may exert interference on vocabulary study.Therefore,teachers should have the foresight in vocabulary teaching and make an effort to reduce the negative effect.
