Generally, Animation is the combination of cartoon and comics, which is highly representing. As a narrative method, it can inspire people; as a taste, it can create a miracle of dynamic fine arts; as a technique, its image has infinite fascinating. The creation of animation is not identical to creating normal painting, because the elements of imagination, distortion, and exaggeration have more proportion in animation than in normal painting. As a reproduction form of art, animation has the source of reality. But, to some extent, the images of animation are mainly directly or indirectly from artist's feelings or abstraction to reality.This thesis aims at exploring theory and practice on abstraction in animation and comics. Therefore, the thesis analyses the basic theory for comic abstraction in the view of psychology. Taking some productions from eight famous international comic artists, the thesis analyzes the practice of abstraction in comic. At last, the significance of abstraction in comic is given.The thesis can be divided in to three chapters. The first chapter gave out the psychological source of animation abstraction, and introduced the sensory source. In the second chapter, the thesis selected 8 artists as examples. The characters and abstraction practice in these selective productions were analyzed one by one. In the third chapter, the thesis presented the significance of abstraction in animation, discussed the importance of abstraction, and the practice value of abstraction in animation.
