With the increasing cooperation between higher institutions at home and abroad, more and more foreign scholars and professors are invited to give lectures in universities in China. However, most of them do not speak Chinese and it is typically hard for them to grasp a new language within a short period of time as well. Therefore, one of the best solutions is on-site interpreting through which the real time communication between the two parties in class could be bridged promptly. This report is based on the interpreter’s on-site consecutive interpreting practice for Music Appreciation course in 2016 at UESTC(University of Electronic Science and Technology of China). This course was designed for undergraduate students with no music background and was taught by an American professor who speaks little Chinese. This report is divided into five parts. The first part is a general description of the task, including the basic information about the task, the requirements from the speaker and an introduction to the audience. The second part is an analysis of task features, namely, its in-depth and extended knowledge in related fields and various communication forms. The third part is the description of task preparation. In this part the interpreter not only unfolds the preparation work she made on background knowledge and the guiding theory, and also lists the main interpreting tactics she selected under the guidance of the Interpretative Theory and on the basis of the task features. The fourth part is the main body of this report. In this part the interpreter demonstrates the successful interpretation performances and the problems she encountered during the interpreting process by case analysis. In the end,she makes a conclusion of this practice and points out suggestions for further improvement.
