The 19th-century German and Austrian romantic art song is a gem in the musical history all over the world, its unique romantic creative technique exerts profound influence on worldwide art songs and the creation of the art of piano accompaniment. Schubert and Schumann, the founders of the 19th-century German and Austrian art songs, had made tremendous contributions to the art form of chamber music which combines vocal singing with piano accompaniment, they also raised the function and status of piano accompaniment to a new historical level, and gave a direct impact on the creation and development of the art of piano accompaniment in all of the world.Winterreise and Diechterliebe are classical representatives composed by Schubert and Schumann respectively, also one of the largest number of entries performed by the two composers. This paper makes an in-depth comparison and study on timbre of piano accompaniment of the two works on the melody of piano accompaniment, rhythm features, exert of the accompaniment texture, musical structure, mode and tonality etc. It studies the similarities and differences between the two composer's creative techniques through the comparison on artistic characteristics of the two works, which arouses thinking when playing the art songs composed by Schubert, Schumann. It will be good for understanding, performance as well as teaching of piano accompaniment of the two master's artistic songs.
