Anaphora In English Texts Characteristics And Translation

Anaphor, an essential cohesive device to connect the text, has become an important object of research among scholars. But most of the studies focus on the perspective of linguistics, or conduct a comparison of the anaphoric phenomena between English and Chinese languages. Those which study the translation of anaphora still account for a minor proportion. This thesis aims at studying the characteristics and English-Chinese translation of anaphora in English texts.Generally speaking, anaphora includes direct anaphora and indirect one, but can fall into more detailed categories if it is classified according to antecedent or anaphor. This thesis adopts the type of anaphor as the standard and divides the phenomena into noun anaphora, pronoun anaphora, adjective anaphora, adverb anaphora and zero anaphora. Meanwhile, the characteristics of the frequently used anaphors in both languages are combed, analyzed and compared.As differences exist along with similarities in the forms and features of these anaphors, difficulties occur in the translation of them. This thesis then focuses on the most important categories of anaphora in English texts, namely noun anaphora, pronoun anaphora and zero anaphora. Taking the characteristics of Chinese anaphors and expression traditions into account, the thesis gives some examples of English text to analyze the cause of mistranslation, and, at the same time, suggests several translation methods in line with different situations. It also points out that to work out natural Chinese expressions is undoubtedly necessary, but the key to the reference of the anaphors is the proper understanding of the original text.
