A Comparative Study Of Wall Street English Teaching Model And The Regular Foreign Language Teaching Model In China

The Linguistics at home and broad have done a lot of comparative studies on English teaching methodologies between regular schools and English Training Institutes in different times. It turns out that the teaching method in regular schools is not very practical for students to use their target language freely. On the contrary, the English Training Institute focuses their attention on English speaking and listening, and has designed a multi-method teaching mode on the base of Constructivism Theory, so as to span the gap in the regular schools.Constructivism Theory advocates that learning is an active activity, and learner constructs the meaning actively. In addition, it should be learner-centered with the guidance from teacher. A great change on the role of teachers and students and the teaching designs has been made in a constructivist learning environment. Educators have been attempting to establish a new theory of teaching designs and teaching methodology that are compatible with the Constructivist learning theory and environment recently. Despite of its toughness, it is worthwhile to work on it, for a positive result has gradually been shown from English Training Institutes in which the Constructivist theory has been applied.In this paper, the author systematically analyses the development of the English teaching in China and its distinctions between regular schools and English Training Institutes. The author takes Wall Street English Training Institute as an example to illustrate the function of Constructivism theory and its outcomes, in the hope of offering some valuable experience for the regular schools to learn from and providing beneficial enlightenment so as to solve the problems in the current English Teaching System.
