Chinese modern society is dynamic. China entered a slow process of modernization with the effect of western invasion and the Chinese social contradictions. Zhang Sigui is one of the pioneers in the time. His life experiences gone through the time from Daoguang period to Tongci period. He participated the process of Chinese modernization. In 1855, ZheJiang's grain turned to transport by the sea way, Ningbo businessmen bought a steamship called "BaoShun". It's the first ship in China's Modern time. Zhang Sigui was the captain. During the Westernization Movement, Zeng Guofan And Shen Baozhen put Zhang Sigui in an important position. He went to Japan as an captain assistant minister of the first official mission in Japan in 1877. And played a positive role between Chinese culture and Japanese culture. Then he returned to China as Guangping county government office in 1882.There are five parts in this paper include the introduction. The introduction focused on the modernization of the late Qing Dynasty and the study of main characters, and summed up the results of previous studies. The first part of the body is mainly about the development of ship and Zhang Sigui's activities during the time as the captain. The second part focuses on Zhang Sigui's interpersonal networks. The third part expatiate the relationship between Zhang Sigui and the foreign affairs of late Qing Dynasty. The fourth part mainly on analysising the works of Zhang Sigui, and this is the key points of the paper. The last part is a summary of the full text and try to be analyzed some deeper meanings.
