| In the society of Late Qing dynasty, there were lots of foreigners who came from the UK, France, the USA, German, Japan and so on. Among these people were missionaries, merchants, diplomats and other people employed by Chinese. They formed a very important social group in China, whose activities involved in politics, economy, military affairs, diplomacy, culture and so on. The foreigners employed by Chinese were called foreign employees, who worked in the departments of military affairs, economy, customs, government and so on. Because of the limited space of this thesis, the foreign employees in this thesis are mainly referred to those who worked as supervisors, consultants, artisans, engineers, technicians in the factory, mine, railway, shipping and bank, except customs. Most of them could fulfill their responsibilities and made important contributions to the establishment and development of Chinese modern enterprises and the modernization of Chinese social economy.Foreign employees were introduced into China as a result of western invasions, and of the necessary to the modern Chinese took to make China powerful and rich, the latter is the only way for modern China to develop. They mostly came from the developed countries, distributed to Chinese main economic areas and professions. They played a positive role in the establishment and development of new enterprises, the improvement of enterprise technology, the cultivation of modern talents and the transformation of thinking, concepts and social conventions. Meanwhile, we should also correctly understand and evaluate the negative influences, especially which resulted from historical reasons and the complication of the question. Generally, however, foreign employees still were actively promote the modernization of economy in Late Qing dynasty, The contribution to promote the progress of society which they made was much more than the negative influences they exerted. |
