In the history of modern literature, Zongpu is a distinctive writer. Her works, from her first important works"The Red Bean"to the four-volume"Introduction to the Wild Gourd", are mostly about Chinese intellectuals'life, fate and seeking of cultural life in different eras, with"The Marriage of Taoyuan Girl and the Wogu Girl"about farmers'life. Her novels and stories on the typical life of Chinese intellectuals can be titled as the history of Chinese intellectuals'fate. The characters in her works are largely of Chinese traditional feature. As a regularity to life value of Chinese intellectuals, traditional culture confines the Chinese intellectuals mentally. The main of traditional culture is the confusion and the Taoism before Qin Dynasty, with the confusion the leading position and Taoism second to it. Both of the two thoughts serve as a guidance in the course of creating his traditional Chinese intellectuals. This paper attempts to study the characters of Chinese intellectuals in Zongpu's works through the way in which Chinese traditional culture affects the characters in her works. The paper aims at a general research to distinct thought of intellectuals in Zongpu's works and thereafter more research on Zongpu's novels will be available. This paper on intellectuals'traditional character in Zongpu's works is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the relationship between intellectuals and society through the thought of confusion. Confucians"consider the state's events their own sake"and that makes them care about state's events. They are doing just so, caring about the fate of the state, the nation and even the whole world. The ideal society of"great men stressing the Way"gave girth to the upright and honesty in the characters of Zongpu's works. They will devote their all to the society and people, and thus their value of life is shown. For intellectuals, the ideal and aim is to make the state prosperous and powerful, and the course of it is what they entrusted, which can not be removed from them. They are striving to construct a human's home full of sweet, kindness and beauty. Confucians'spirit of"kind people care for others"makes intellectuals feel hopeful. They make the world go round with"kindness and love"and it is just in the way of"kindness and love"that they are longing for a beautiful world. Besides, intellectuals are always disciplining themselves with traditional Confucians thoughts. In traditional thoughts, moral is considered the top standard in life and a vital thing. Whenever personal benefit and social moral cannot be realized at the same time, they will choose the latter, however hard it will be. Between personal and moral, they will keep moral the first place. This choice in their keeping rules and self disciplines shows them morally. The second part discusses the way that confusion affects the characters and the characters show off their attraction when in difficulty. Intellectuals pay much more attention to their personality, for they are responsible to society and are longing for a regular world. When they are in trouble, they still stick to their aim and value their standard. They care for their moral and aim in life and even in difficulty they will never give up, which reveals the Chinese cultural tradition of"keeping moral". They keep themselves noble and honest to life in the varied world. In trouble, they undergo all kinds of disasters and in the very novels of Zongpu the spirit of Chinese intellectuals is fully shown. They follow the way of Confucian and suffer what is hard to suffer for common people and their way is just that of the expectation of Chinese culture. These characters keep themselves upright and honest and keep the home of Chinese a wonderful land no matter what difficulty may occur. In the dark, they like a spark and a light tower making the Chinese traditional spirit of intellectuals be passed down. The high quality of traditional Chinese are fully revealed through the people so-called"the back"in the novels. In their life journey, especially, when in trouble facing pressure, they will keep their aim and will always stick to their ideal without being interfered by anything in the varying world. The third part is about more effect of Taoism to the intellectuals. In poor situation intellectuals can survive, and that benefits from both confusion's Taoism's thought. It is the two thoughts of confusion and Taoism that helps to form the character of intellectuals'features. Taoist School has a far-reaching effect on Chinese intellectuals as well as their personalities. Chinese intellectuals need a quiet world and an upright personality, especially at the turning points of our times. As a speaker of the society, a intellectual always have dream of caring for"the regulation, the family, the state and the whole world"but the dream is truly difficult to realize. So when they meet difficulties, they will act as they are pleased which is decided by the reality of Chinese culture. Taoist School has a way of"the weak overcomes the strong"and"do in doing nothing", and a style of retreat for further forward. In this way such a thought helps to find a peaceful land for the intellectuals of China free from trouble and interference. In the twentieth century, the intellectuals in China have suffered enough, with the changing society. Their view is limited and they are not as generous and thus the characters in Zongpu's novels have become a source of the construction of their characters, for culture is a link to the development of a nation in nature without which the nation will go to an end. Therefore, the present intellectuals should care for not only people's life but also the passing down of the traditional culture, and in this way they can become the holder and spreader of traditional culture, especially when such a culture serves as a"social moral". It can be seen,In the process of seeking, the cultural mission of intellectuals need to take a difficult road.
