Comment On Private Narrative Of ZongPu’s Novel

As an early-debuted novelist, Zong-pu harvested a lot in this field. To make a comprehensive survey, most of her novels are about intellectuals. Intellectuals are the main object of her description and the subject of her discourse history.Red Bean and Wild Gourd Prelude were written in different period, but her writing attitude always sticked in it. She insists writing intellectuals. In her narration to daily life, she emphasizes clothing of the characters, furniture in the rooms, even attentive names of characters. All the features contribute to a rich petty-bourgeois sentiment, also bring an unintentional superiority feeling of intellectuals as an elite class. On the other hand, because she is in the presence of contemporary history, inevitably influenced by the mainstream politics and culture, therefore she can not critic the history objectively by her novel, a strong subjective color can not be avoided. At the same time, her over-interference to the characters made them fit to her own moral idea, thus blocked an objective development. Unlike other new-historism writers, Zong-pu over emphasized macro-narration and perfect heroes, that panders to the mainstream political ideology. She also took Japanese features and Yun-nan as the "others" to narrate, in order to construct a historical epic. But because of the author’s over-inflamed epic complex and over-emphasis to daily life, much dramatic plot should be arranged, while too much unnatural coincidence weaken the realness of the story, thus lead to a collapse of the epic building and make a paradox. But on the other side, the insistence of "truthfulness and elegance" as her consistent style and elegant words compensate the defect of this work in some distance. In conclusion, the subject of intellectuals, petty-bourgeois sentiment, personal narration to the history and insisting the style of truthfulness and elegance are narration features of Zong-pu’s novels.
