Format is the layout of the whole book. It refers to implications of planning, designing and editting the matter in a plane. The format design is an important part of transmitting information. Through a variety of design styles, we can know the information is serious or popular, or is the academic essay or life story. We can also know the character color is outward or inward, and the content of the article is deep or bright. There are five spread revolutions happened in the history of human's development. Each time it brings human into a new era and new realm. Each spread revolution not only greatly improved human's transmitting capacities, but also brought tremendous change from material to spirit. The third spread revolution made people enter the printing era, which is the glorious chapter in the history of human's civilization. The coming of the printing era effectively promoted the development of format. Because of reading psychology and aesthetic needs, the uniform texture, size and printing technology made format to be relatively fixed and developedThe fifth spread revolution lead people into network era, which made the design format from manual typesetting to informationaized design, from static conveying to dynamic conveying, from single-media reflection to multi-media release, from two-dimensional interpretation of a style to three-dimensuinal reflection, from traditional printing design to the spread of virtual information image. These historic changes constitute the visual evolution of format design, and reflect the development of design culture, and also call for the emergence of new design concepts and design strategies. From the printing age to network age, the connotation and extension of the format expanded a lot, which is the the great renovation of design concept in the modern design area. We need to conduct an in-depth discussion and comparison, which helps us understand the characteristics of today's format so as to establish the accurate concept of thr format. Through the analysing and comparing the characteristics from printing era to network era, this thesis probe into the common ground and differences of the two ages. Through such comparisons, and further look to the development trends of the future format.
