Since its introduction into China in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, western watercolor has not received enough attention nor experienced a proper development over a long period of time. Yet during recent decades, owing to the watercolor artists' enhancing understanding of such a painting species, the market is gradually attaching more attention to it, which renders watercolor painting one of the most fast-developing species of painting in the past twenty years. In view of this, the development of watercolor has become an attractive subject for research.During the hundred years following the introduction of watercolor into China, the appearance of watercolor art has undergone constant changes, evolving from a painting species of unitary panting subject, form of expression and language of panting, to a popular one which possesses rich expression languages and a diversity of styles. The diversification development of the art of watercolor painting has become a new trend. This paper attempts at an analysis of the diversification development of Chinese contemporary watercolor. It consists of five chapters: Chapter One is a general introduction to the developing history of Chinese watercolor; Chapter Two is a discussion on the contributing reasons which give rise to the diversification development of Chinese contemporary watercolor; Chapter Three elaborates on the concrete manifestations of the diversification development of Chinese contemporary watercolor; Chapter Five is an anticipation of the perspective development of Chinese watercolor. Through the analysis and summarization of the development of Chinese watercolor, the author of this paper draws the conclusion that facing the great opportunity and challenge in contemporary China, Chinese watercolor art is expected to show more nationalized characteristics and the styles of the art of watercolor will enjoy more diversified developing space.
